New Haven, Conn. (6/11/19) Dominican College men's lacrosse standout Kyle Souza on Tuesday was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Student-Athlete of the Month for May 2019, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. Souza earned the honor for achieving success on the field, in the classroom and contributing to his surrounding community.
Souza served as a senior captain in 2019 and helped guide the Chargers to the program's inaugural trip to the CACC semifinals in early May. Fourth-seeded Dominican gave a solid showing in the semis versus top-seeded and regular-season champion Chestnut Hill College before coming up just short on May 2 during the first day of the CACC Spring Championship Festival. Just prior to the CACC semifinals, Souza was named to the All-CACC Second Team for his stellar play throughout the regular season.
A senior criminal justice major, Souza concludes his academic career with a cumulative grade point average of 3.98. He was named the CACC Top XVI Award Winner at the men's lacrosse championship banquet for having the highest GPA at the final's site. He has twice been named to the Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-District I At-Large Team, while earning Academic All-America honors (2nd team) in 2018. The 2019 Academic All-America Team will be announced later this month by the national organization of sports information directors.
Souza has earned a myriad of other academic awards, including twice being named to the CACC Men's Lacrosse All-Academic Team (2018 & 2019); named the Dominican College Top Male Scholar-Athlete in each of his four seasons in Orangeburg; recipient of the Dominican College Outstanding Senior Award at Commencement; and inducted into the Dominican College New York Sigma Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma.
Souza has also been active in his surrounding community. He has served as a resident advisor at Dominican; been a member of DC's student-athlete advisory committee; and served as an assistant coach of the CONNY 7th & 8th grade boy's lacrosse team.
The CACC Student-Athlete of the Month Award is given out each month during the academic calendar for member schools in the conference (September through May). The award recognizes success and achievement in athletics, academics, and community engagement.
Souza becomes the first student-athlete from Dominican to earn the award during the 2018-19 season.
