Melbourne, FL (2/27/11) The Dominican College softball team opened the 2011 season with a non-conference split with host Florida Tech this afternoon. Dominican won the first game, 1-0, while Florida Tech rallied to win game two, 2-1.
After seven scoreless innings in game one, Brielle Kerscher (Staten Island, NY) was placed at second base due to the international tie breaker rule to start the inning and later moved to third on the ground out to second base by right fielder Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH). An RBI single up-the-middle off the bat of centerfielder DJ Jeppson (Sylmar, CA) brought home Kerscher and gave DC the eventual 1-0 victory.
Junior right-handed pitcher Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) improved to 1-0 on the season with the complete game shut out win with three strikeouts and five hits.
Freshman Paige Berzak (Cypress, CA) went 2-2 in the game with a walk.
In game two, Dominican took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Childers got a one-out walk and later advanced to second base on a Florida Tech fielding error. With two outs, junior left fielder Ashley Martinez (Bloomfield, NJ) hit an RBI single to plate Childers.
Florida Tech rallied with two unearned runs in the fifth on three hits to come away with the 2-1 victory. Tech limited the Lady Chargers to just three hits in the second game.
Childers suffered the loss (0-1) allowing two runs (both unearned) on six hits and two strikeouts.
With the split Dominican now stands at 1-1 on the season.
Dominican is back in action on Tuesday when they take on St. Leo University in a non-conference double-header. The first game is slated to begin at 5pm.
