Clermont, FL (3/4/11) The Dominican College softball team evened their overall record to 4-4 after a non-conference double-header sweep of Queens College, 2-1 and 4-1, this afternoon in games played at the National Training Center.
The Knights held a 1-0 lead through six innings of play when DC pulled ahead with two runs in the top of the seventh. Ashley Martinez (Bloomfield, NJ) led off the inning with a single to right field and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by second basemen Brielle Kerscher (Staten Island, NY). Right fielder Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH) followed with a walk and sophomore shortstop Julie Plante (Swansea, MA) delivered an RBI double to left center to plate Martinez. Childers later came in to score on a Knight throwing error for the 2-1 eventual victory.
Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) picked up the complete game win, allowing one run on six hits and five strikeouts.
Martinez went 2-3 in the game.
In game two, Dominican had a three-run second inning to take a 3-0 lead and added a run in the third to go up 4-0. In the second Deidre Jeppson (Sylmar, CA) led off the inning with a single to right field and moved to second on the single to left by Paige Berzak (Cypress, CA). A single by third basemen Kathryn Coles (Farmville, VA) brought in Jeppson and Berzak later scored on a QC fielding error. A sacrifice fly ball to center of the bat of Childers platted Berzak for the final run of the inning.
In the third, designated player Shelby Wassmann (Loudoun, VA) got on base with a one out single and moved to second on a two out single by Berzak. An RBI single by Coles scored Wassmann to give DC a 4-0 lead. A Knight run in the sixth made the final score 4-1 DC.
