New Haven, CT (3/13/11) The Dominican College softball squad split a non-conference double-header with Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon in games played at Pelz Field. The Owls won game one, 11-4, while the Lady Chargers rebounded to win the night cap, 7-6, in 13 innings to improve to 7-7 on the season.

New Haven, CT (3/13/11) The Dominican College softball squad split a non-conference double-header with Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon in games played at Pelz Field. The Owls won game one, 11-4, while the Lady Chargers rebounded to win the night cap, 7-6, in 13 innings to improve to 7-7 on the season.
Game One: SCSU held a 1-0 lead after an inning when the Lady Chargers fought back with two runs in the second as Paige Berzak (Cypress, CA) got a one-out walk and sophomore Brielle Kerscher (Staten Island, NY) hit a two-run blast over the left field fence to take a 2-1 lead.
The Owls exploded for five runs in the third to regain a 6-1 lead, but DC put two more runs on the board in the fifth as Ashley Corrao (Staten Island, NY) received a free pass and freshman Shelby Wassmann (Loudon, VA) hit her first collegiate home run as she hit a two-run shot to left field to cut the lead to 6-3.
SCSU tacked on five more runs in the sixth for the final 11-4 score.
Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) suffered the loss (4-2), allowing 11 runs (9 earned) on 13 hits.
Game Two: Dominican got on the board with three runs in the top of the first as Wassmann hit a sacrifice fly ball to left field to plate Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH). A wild pitch scored Julie Plante (Swansea, MA) and an error on the Owl catcher allowed Corrao to come into score and give DC a 3-0 lead.
SCSU runs in the second and third innings tied the game at 3-3, but DC regained a 4-3 lead in the fourth as Kathryn Coles (Farmville, VA) led off the inning with a single and later scored on the RBI double to left field by Deidre Jeppson (Sylmar, CA).
The Owls tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. In the ninth, Dominican put a run on the board as Corrao hit an RBI infield single to score Jeppson to give the Lady Chargers a 5-4 lead. SCSU came right back in the bottom stanza to re-tie the game at 5-5.
In the 13th inning, DC scored two runs as Ashley Martinez (Bloomfield, NJ) hit a two-run double to center field to put the Lady Chargers up 7-5. In the bottom stanza, SCSU added a run for the final 7-6 score.
Childers improved to 3-3 on the season in the complete game victory, allowing six runs (four earned) on 17 hits and collecting eight strikeouts.
