WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WINS HOME OPENER AGAINST MERCY COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (11/12/10) The Dominican College women's basketball team defeated Mercy College, 63-52, in the second game and their home opener of the 2010 Dominican College Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament being held on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. In the tournament opener, St. Thomas Aquinas College defeated Nyack College, 76-61.
Orangeburg, NY (11/12/10) The Dominican College women's basketball team defeated Mercy College, 63-52, in the second game and their home opener of the 2010 Dominican College Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament being held on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. In the tournament opener, St. Thomas Aquinas College defeated Nyack College, 76-61.
Dominican scored the game's opening basket on a jumper by senior guard Shanice Scully (St. Albans, NY). The Maverics answered back with an 11-0 run to gain an 11-2 advantage and held a 15-6 lead with 11:22 remaining in the half.
DC charged back with a 13-3 run with the last three buckets of the run all being three point field goals, two by junior forward Marley Klunk (York, PA) and one by junior Kaity Lent (Vineland, NJ) as the Lady Chargers regained a 19-18 lead.
Leading 21-20 with 5:21 remaining before the intermission Dominican closed out the half 10-2 spurt for a 31-22 lead at the half.
The Lady Chargers never trailed in the second half, starting things off by outscoring Mercy 7-2 in the first three minutes to extend their lead to 38-24. DC would never relinquish a double-digit lead and wouldlead by as many as 17 points, 53-36 with 6:29 remaining and 59-42 with 5:04 to go in the game. Two Mercy foul shots with 0:08 left cut the deficit to the final 63-52 score and DC victory.
Klunk led all scorers iwth 19 points on the night, shooting 7-12 from the floor and grabbed a game leading 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Shannon Lavelle (Floral Park, NY) added 11 points and game leading eight assists in the victory, while forward Bianca Harris (Teaneck, NJ) tallied seven points and five caroms. Freshman KC Jentzen (Pearl River, NY) had a nice game off the bench, netting six points and eight rebounds.
With the win Dominican stands at 1-0 overall.
In the first game of the tournament, St. Thomas Aquinas College defeated Nyack College, 76-61.
Tomorrow's games feature Nyack College against Mercy College at 2pm and the finale will see Dominican square off against St. Thomas Aquinas College at 4pm.
