WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SNAPS LOSING STREAK WITH VICTORY OVER NYACK COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (1/22/11) The Dominican College women's basketball team snapped a six game losing streak after defeating the visiting Nyack College Warriors, 65-59, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game held on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. With the win Dominican improves to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the CACC.

The Lady Chargers opened up the game's first four minutes with an 8-3 run, finished off by consecutive baskets from senior forward Jasmine Schinella (Wappinger Falls, NY). Nyack later came back to cut the lead to 13-12 with 13:39 to go before the break, but five straight DC points rebuilt an 18-12 advantage.
With Dominican leading, 20-19, and 5:40 on the clock, the Lady Chargers went on a quick 7-0 run to go up 27-19 with about a minute and a half left. The Warriors closed out the first half scoring with the final five points to trail 27-24 at the intermission.
The first seven and a half minutes of the second half was a back and forth battle which saw five tied scores and neither team able to gain more than a four point advantge. A three point basket from junior guard Meghan Murphy (Carmel, NY) put the Lady Chargers up 52-48 with 5:47 ticks on the clock and sophomore Lindsey Lopez (Elmwood Park, NJ) followed with jumpshot to give DC their biggest lead of the second half at 54-48.
After a NC basket, two free throws from senior Shanice Scully (St. Albans, NY) extended the Dominican lead to seven points (57-50), but the Warriors answered back with six consecutive points to cut the deficit to a point (57-56) with just over a minute remaining.
A key three point basket from Lopez and a free throw from guard Shannon Lavelle (Floral Park, NY) gave the Lady Chargers a 61-56 lead with 0:25, but NC came back to trail 61-59 with 12 ticks on the clock, but four straight free throws from Lopez and Lavelle solidified a 65-59 DC victory.
Lopez led three Lady Chargers in double figures with 18 points, shooting 3-5 from the three point arc. Murphy came off the bench to score 13 points and five rebounds, while Schinella finished with 10 points, a season high five steals and four caroms.
