Caldwell, N.J. (1/21/15) The Dominican College women's basketball team rallied from a nine point halftime deficit to ultimately force overtime, but it wasn't enough as the Caldwell University Cougars edged the visitors, 78-74, this evening in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division contest played at the George R. Newman Center.
With the loss, the Lady Chargers fall to 7-11 overall and 5-4 in conference play, while the Cougars improve to 10-8 overall and 7-2 in the CACC.
A layup from freshman guard Rebecca Rabeiro (Midland Park, N.J.) with 13:24 left in the first half gave DC a 13-12 advantage, but Caldwell turned the tables with a 10-6 run to go ahead, 22-21 and later led 24-23 when the Cougars closed out the half outscoring the Lady Chargers 10-2 for a 34-25 lead at the break.
Caldwell scored the first five points of the second half to extend their lead to 14 points (39-25), but Dominican counted with a 24-12 tear to tie the game at 49-all with just under ten minutes to go in regulation. Lated tied at 51-51, the Lady Chargers regained the lead by scoring the next nine of 11 points for a 60-53 lead with 5:18 on the clock.
The Cougars came back with a 9-0 run to reclaim a two point lead (62-60), but two free throws from senior Lashonda Hathorne* (Queens, N.Y.) retied the score at 62 a-piece. With 43 ticks left on the clock, Deja Gabbidon (Teaneck, N.J.) went 2-2 from the charity stripe to give DC a 66-64 lead. A Caldwell jumper with 25 seconds to go tied the game and forced the extra period.
The first six points of overtime were scored by the Cougars for the 72-66 lead, but the Lady Chargers answered back to pull within a point, 73-72, but that would be as close as they would get as Caldwell hung on for the 78-74 victory.
Hathorne led three Lady Chargers in double figures with 20 points and seven rebounds.
Lisa Bouffard (Wallkill, N.Y.) added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Gabbidon came off the bench to net 14 points and seven caroms in the loss.
Dominican is scheduled to travel to Georgian Court University this coming Saturday.
