WOMEN'S LACROSSE FALLS IN SEASON OPENER
Hillburn, N.Y. (3/2/13) The Dominican College women's lacrosse team opened up the 2013 season with a tough, 17-16, double overtime loss to host St. Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference game played at the Torne Valley Sports Complex. With the loss Dominican stands at 0-1 overall, while the Spartans improve to 3-0 on the season.

With the loss Dominican stands at 0-1 overall, while the Spartans improve to 3-0 on the season.
Dominican trailed 5-4 with 6:09 remaining in the first half when the team scored the final three goals to go ahead 7-5 at the break. Sophomore Gina Sparaco (Freeport, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the run and her second of the game, while freshman attacker Kelly Barbarite (Smithtown, N.Y.) completed her hat trick for the game with the last two goals.
DC led 9-7 in the second half when the Spartans came back with a 5-0 run to go ahead 12-9 with 12:03 remaining in regulation. Sparaco netted two straight goals and freshman attacker Amanda Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored a free position goal to tie the game at 12-12 with 10:39 on the clock. After a STAC goal made the score 13-12, sophomore attacker Allison Smithwick (Commack, N.Y.) tallied back-to-back goals to give the Lady Chargers a 14-13 lead. The Spartans scored the game-tying goal with eight seconds left to force overtime.
In the first overtime, STAC scored the first two goals to go ahead 16-14, but the Lady Chargers came back as midfielder Emily Murray (Oakdale, N.Y.) recorded the next two goals, the second with only 26 ticks left on the clock to re-tie the contest at 16-16.
The Spartans scored the game winner in the second overtime for the 17-16 win.
Sparaco led Dominican with four goals and added an assist for a total of five points.
Christina Brennan (Washington Township, N.J.) had a team leading five assists and one goal for a team best six points on the night. Barbarite finished with three goals and two assists for five points.
Freshman goalie Brittany Kiernan (Clarkstown, N.Y.) made seven saves in the loss.
Dominican is back in action on March 16th as they travel to non-conference opponent, Mercy College.
