WOMEN'S LACROSSE EARNS FIRST WIN OF SEASON
Hillburn, N.Y. (3/17/15) The Dominican College women's lacrosse team opened up Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a 12-11 victory over the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University in a game played this afternoon at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
Hillburn, N.Y. (3/17/15) The Dominican College women's lacrosse team opened up Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a 12-11 victory over the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University in a game played this afternoon at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
Following the draw by Christina Brennan (Washington Township, N.J.) with 25 ticks left she passed the ball to Haliann Fitzgerald (Walden, N.Y.) who would give it to senior midfielder Emily Murray* (Oakdale, N.Y.). Murray netted the game-winner and her third goal of the game with one second left in regulation.
The Lady Chargers quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of the contest as Fitzgerald opened the game with an unassisted goal and Murray converted a free position shot with 28:20 left in the opening half.
Following a GCU goal, attacker Allison Smithwick* (Commack, N.Y.) scored her ninth goal of the season off the assist from Shayne Gallagher (Blauvelt, N.Y.) to regain a two goal lead, 3-1.
The Lions roared back with four consecutive scores to pull ahead 5-3, but Dominican closed out the first half with a 2-0 run off back-to-back goals from Brennan to tie the game at 5-5 at the break.
Dominican continued on their run in the second stanza as they began the second half with three straight goals. Gallagher, Brennan and Fitzgerald each scored an unassisted goal during the run to rebuild and 8-5 DC lead with 26:29 on the clock.
GCU rallied once again with a 5-0 run to regain the lead at 10-8 with under fifteen minutes to go. The Lady Chargers fought back with the next three goals over the next seven minutes to take a 11-10 lead with 2:52 on the clock. Smithwick started the run with an unassisted goal, followed by a free position goal from senior Gina Sparaco* (Freeport, N.Y.) to make the score 10-all. Murray put DC ahead 11-10 with 2:52 to go with her second game goal off the pass from Fitzgerald.
Georgian Court re-tied the game with 25 seconds left in regulation. Afer a GCU time out play resumed with the draw from Brennan and the eventual game-winning goal of the stick of Murray.
Murray and Brennan each recorded hat tricks in the win with three game goals.
Smithwick and Fitzgerald scored two goals a-piece, while Fitzgerald had two assists.
Sparaco and Gallagher netted one goal each and Gallagher had the other assist.
DC goalie Brittany Kiernan (Clarkstown, N.Y.) made seven saves in the win.
Following the win, Dominican improves to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in CACC play.
The Lady Chargers return to action tomorrow with a non-conference game against Mercy College. Game time is set for 4:00 pm at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
