WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL HOLDS OFF LE MOYNE COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (10/2/11) The Dominican College women's volleyball team held off a comeback from the visiting Dolphins of Le Moyne College, 3-2, this morning in a non-conference match held on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. Dominican held a 2-0 lead when Le Moyne won the third and fourth sets to force the decisive fifth set.
Orangeburg, NY (10/2/11) The Dominican College women's volleyball team held off a comeback from the visiting Dolphins of Le Moyne College, 3-2, this morning in a non-conference match held on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. Dominican held a 2-0 lead when Le Moyne won the third and fourth sets to force the decisive fifth set.
The first set was tied at 6-all when an 8-4 Lady Charger run put them ahead, 14-10. The Dolphins fought back to re-tie the set at 17-17, but the Lady Chargers closed out the set with an 8-2 run for the 25-19 victory. DC never trailed in the second set, cruising to the 25-13 win and the 2-0 match lead.
Le Moyne regrouped in set three, starting out with a 10-5 lead, but DC came back and later tied the set at 16-16. Tied 24-24, a Dolphin kill and a set error led them to the 26-24 win. With the fourth set tied at 9-a piece, LC outscored Dominican, 8-4 over the next 12 points to pull ahead 17-13 and went on to tie the match at 2-2 with the 25-20 set four win.
In the decisive fifth set, Dominican scored the first four points and increased the lead to 11-5. However, the Dolphins answered back with a 9-2 run to take a 14-13 lead. At match point, a Dominican kill by sophomore Randi Garrett (Rockledge, FL) tied the set at 14-14. Tied 16-all, back-to-back kills by N'Jameh Philip (Monroe, NY) and Garrett led the Lady Chargers to the thrilling 18-16 win and 3-2 match victory.
Junior Michelle Fiorvanti (Commack, NY) led all attackers with 16 kills on the afternoon. Courtney Heard (Ventura, CA) tallied 11 kills, while freshman Kayla Dexter (Selah, WA) added 10 kills. Setter Whitney Ranger (Ventura, CA) had a match leading 44 assists, while libero Jordyn Fuller (Keller, TX) recorded 30 defensive digs.
With the win Dominican even their overall record to 9-9 on the season.
Dominican is back in action on Tuesday evening when they host Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division rival, Caldwell College, for a 7pm match on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
