TOP SEEDED CHARGERS WIN ON DAY ONE OF CACC TOURNAMENT
New Castle, DE (5/12/11) The top seeded Dominican College baseball team won their opening round game of the 2011 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament this afternoon in a game played at Wilson Field on the campus of Wilmington University. The Chargers defeated the fifth-seeded Devils of the University of the Sciences, 7-0 to improve to 27-15 overall.
New Castle, DE (5/12/11) The top seeded Dominican College baseball team won their opening round game of the 2011 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament this afternoon in a game played at Wilson Field on the campus of Wilmington University. The Chargers defeated the fifth-seeded Devils of the University of the Sciences, 7-0 to improve to 27-15 overall.
Dominican scored a run in each of first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Third basemen Michael Levy, Jr (Salisbury Mill, NY) led off the inning with triple to right center in the bottom of the first. Senior Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) brought him home on an RBI ground out. In the second inning, Christopher Gonzalez (Bronx, NY) started the second inning off with double down the left field line and moved to third on the bunt single by Marco Moreno (Miami, FL). Catcher Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) came to the plate and delivered an RBI single through the left side to make the score 2-0.
In the third senior Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) collected his 200th career hit as he led off the third inning with a single to center field. Tony Blake (Windsor, CT) also singled to center field to put two runners on base. A fly ball out moved Robinson over to third and he scored on the RBI fielder's choice from Gonzalez for the 3-0 lead.
The lead was extended to 4-0 in the fifth as Moreno hit a sacrifice fly ball to plate Andrew Camardella (Pelham, NY), who had singled to center field and a batter later moved to second on a single and advanced to third on a Devil fielding error.
DC tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning as first basemen Tyler Clark (Cheshire, CT) hit a two-run triple to right center field and Levy followed with an RBI single to left field for the final 7-0 victory.
Charger starter Dave Bartuska (Duryea, PA) went eight innings in the shut out victory, scattering just four hits and striking out seven to improve to 9-2 overall. Ryan Calby (Huntington Station, NY) came in to pitch the ninth inning.
Dominican will take on the winner of the #2 Wilmington University/#3 Post University tomorrow at 3pm in the winner's bracket of the tournament. The game will be at Frawley Stadium.
