
BASEBALL EARNS WIN OVER SPARTANS
Pomona, N.Y. (3/22/23) The Dominican University New York baseball team snapped its losing streak today by defeating the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans, 8-7, in a non-conference game played at Clover Stadium.

The Chargers (2-17) trailed 2-0 through four innings of play but struck for three runs on five hits to claim a 3-2 advantage in the top of the fifth. Shortstop Peter Kiefer (Waterford, Conn.) singled up-the-middle to bring home Jean Nunez (New York, N.Y.) and Tyler Richman (Sunrise, Fla.) followed with a double to left field to plate Kiefer and tie the contest. Catcher Ty Gilligan (Ringwood, N.J.) hit a double down the left field line to score Richman and give Dominicna the 3-2 lead.
Dominican added to the lead the seventh stanza with four runs on five hits and error. Kiefer got things going with a run-scoring double down the left field line and Gilligan delivered an RBI single through the ride side. Phil Whitney (Newark, N.J.) later followed a single to left to score a run and a run would later scoring on a Spartan fielding error to increase the lead to 7-2.
STAC got a run back in the bottom of the seventh and tacked on three more in their half of the eighth frame to cut the lead to 7-6.
The Chargers added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Benjamin Avila (Walden, N.Y.) delivered a run-scoring single to right field to extend the lead to 8-6.
The Spartans made things interesting in the ninth by scoring a run and having the tying run get in scoring position, but reliever John Stoliker (Guilderland, N.Y.) was able to record a fly ball out to secure the 8-7 win.
Richman went 4-5 in the game with two runs scored, while Kiefer, Darian Almonte (Orangeburg, N.Y.) and David Knepper (Miami, Fla.) all had two hits in the victory.
Kiefer and Gilligan each had two RBIs.
Starter Matt Sabene (Danbury, Conn.) picked up the win in five innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits and three strikeouts. Stoliker recorded his first save, collecting five strikeouts.
Dominican returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Post University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action at Clover Stadium.
