
GIANNETTI GETS 900TH CAREER WIN IN SPLIT WITH GRIFFINS
Suffern, N.Y. (4/12/23) Dominican University New York's Head Baseball Coach, Rick Giannetti, earned his 900th career victory this evening as the Chargers split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College. The Griffins rallied with a six-run top of the eighth inning for the 12-6 win, but the Chargers brought home a 9-7 victory in the nightcap for the milestone win.

Suffern, N.Y. (4/12/23) Dominican University New York's Head Baseball Coach, Rick Giannetti, earned his 900th career victory this evening as the Chargers split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College. The Griffins rallied with a six-run top of the eighth inning for the 12-6 win, but the Chargers brought home a 9-7 victory in the nightcap for the milestone win.
Following the contests the Chargers are now 5-26 overall and 2-9 in conference play
Game One: Catcher Benjamin Avila (Walden, N.Y.) got the Chargers on the scoreboard in the first with an RBI double to left field and the team added three more runs in the second as David Knepper (Miami, Fla.) hit a two-run double to right field and later scored on a passed ball for the 4-3 advantage.
Avila increased the lead to 5-3 in the third with a solo blast and in the fifth, Phil Whitney (Newark, N.J.) singled home a run to give Dominican a 6-3 lead.
CHC scored two runs in the sixth and forced extra innings with a run in the top of the seventh for a 6-6 tie. In their half of the eighth, the Griffins scored six runs on three hits for the 12-6 win.
Avila and Whitney both went 2-4 in the game.
Game Two: Dominican trailed 3-0 after one and a half innings, but scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to re-tie the game. Whitney had an RBI groundout, while Christian Fils-Aime (North Babylon, N.Y.) and Knepper both had run-scoring singles.
The Chargers added to the lead in the third by scoring five runs on four hits. Avila got things going as he reached on a fielder's choice that allowed a run to come home and a Griffin error allowed the second run to score. A two-run double by Whitney gave Dominican a 7-3 lead and Fils-Aime hit a sacrifice fly to increase the advantage to 8-3.
Avila hit his second home run of the day in the Charger half of the fourth to push the lead to 9-4. CHC would score runs in the fifth and sixth frames for the final 9-7 win.
Starter Matt Sabene (Danbury, Conn.) picked up the win in five innings of work, while Robert Liriano (Haverstraw, N.Y.) earned his first save of the season in two innings of work.
Dominican returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they host Adelphi University in non-conference action.
