Caldwell, N.J. (4/22/23) The Dominican University New York baseball team downed the Cougars of Caldwell University in a CACC north division doubleheader.
With the sweep, the Chargers take the season series from the Cougars and improve to 10-29 overall and 7-10 in conference play.
Game One: Dominican opened the doubleheader with a 14-4 victory. The Chargers jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the first two innings.
Tyler Richman (Sunrise, Fla.) drove in the first run of the game in the first inning with an RBI-groundout. Peter Kiefer (Waterford, Conn.) ripped a two-RBI double for a 3-0 lead and Christian Fils-Aime (North Babylon, N.Y.) added an RBI-single to extend to a 4-0 lead. David Knepper (Miami, Fla.) added an RBI-groundout to give Dominican a 5-0 advantage.
Knepper drove in his second run of the game in the fourth inning and later came around to score to extend the lead to 7-0.
The Cougars got on the board in the fifth inning and added one run in each of the sixth and seventh inning.
Three runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the eighth inning extended the Dominican lead to 10 runs. Knepper drove in his third RBI and finished the game with two hits.
Davin Keddell-Tuckey (Troy, N.Y.) finished with four hits including a triple. Richman finished the game with three RBIs while Kiefer hit three doubles and drove in two RBIs.
Phil Whitney (Newark, N.J.) added three hits including a triple while Benjamin Avila (Walden, N.Y.) hit a two-RBI double.
Brendan Turton (Westbury, N.Y.) threw five strong innings and added five strikeouts in his first win of the season.
Game Two: The Chargers completed the sweep with a 10-0 victory in game two.
Robert Liriano (Haverstraw, N.Y.) tossed a complete game shutout and recorded 11 strikeouts to secure his second win of the season.
Whitney added two more hits including his second triple of the doubleheader and three RBIs. Jason Sosa-Rivas (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Fils-Aime each added doubles while Sosa-Rivas finished with a team-high three hits.
Kiefer added two more hits for a total of five on the day and one RBI. Richman and Jean Nunez (New York, N.Y.) each recorded one RBI.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow on the road for a conference doubleheader with the Rams of Thomas Jefferson University.
