Pomona, N.Y. (4/27/23) The Dominican University New York baseball team split a CACC doubleheader with the University of Bridgeport this afternoon at Clover Stadium.
After the split, the Chargers now stand at 13-32 overall and 9-13 in the CACC. Bridgeport now holds an overall record of 9-36 and a CACC record of 5-18.
Game One: The Chargers took game one by a score of 15-5 in seven innings.
Matt Sabene (Danbury, Conn.) started on the hill for Dominican in game one and tossed five innings of two run ball and recorded three strikeouts to earn his third win of the season.
The Chargers scored eight runs between the second and third innings. Bridgeport got on the board in the top of the third inning but a bases-clearing three-RBI double by Jason Sosa-Rivas (Yonkers, N.Y.) blew the game open.
The Chargers struck for five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning after an RBI-single by Phil Whitney (Newark, N.J.) and Christian Fils-Aime (North Babylon, N.Y.) worked a bases loaded walk. David Knepper (Miami, Fla.) added a sac fly and Davin Keddell-Tuckey (Troy, N.Y.) singled in two runs.
The Chargers completed the victory with two runs in the bottom of the seventh after Keddell-Tuckey's third hit and third RBI of the game while Peter Kiefer (Waterford, Conn.) followed with an RBI-single.
Sosa-Rivas finished with a double, three walks, and four RBIs. Keddell-Tuckey went 3-6 with three RBIs while Jean Nunez (New York, N.Y.) finished with three hits and four runs scored. Benjamin Avila (Walden, N.Y.) added two hits including a double and one RBI.
Game Two: The Purple Knights earned a comeback victory in game two for a split.
Starting pitcher Jason Giambra threw a complete seven innings and recorded six strikeouts to earn the victory.
Brendan Turton (Westbury, N.Y.) took the mound for the Chargers in game two. Turton recorded four strikeouts over four innings of work and only surrendered one run.
Sosa-Rivas crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to give the Chargers an early 2-0 lead.
The Purple Knights cut the Dominican lead in half after a sac fly by Vin Mallon in the top of the third inning. UB rallied in the top of the fifth inning and tied the game on an RBI-double by Mallon for his second RBI of the game.
Jake Woods followed with an RBI-single which brought Mallon around to score and gave the Purple Knights the 3-2 edge.
Giambra shutout the Chargers the rest of the way and secured the game two win.
Dominican returns to action on Sunday when they host Wilmington University for a CACC doubleheader from Clover Stadium beginning at 11:30 AM.
