Pomona, N.Y. (5/3/23) The Dominican University New York baseball team completed the 2023 season with a split with the Wildcats of Wilmington University in conference action at Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y.
Dominican fell in game one by a score of 7-2 but Joseph Coppola (Cornwall, N.Y.) delivered the game-winning hit in extra innings of game two.
Today's doubleheader marked the final games for seniors Williams Tavarez (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Jason Sosa-Rivas (Yonkers, N.Y.), Brendan Turton (Westbury, N.Y.), Matthew Sabene (Danbury, Conn.), Christopher Fox (Bronx, N.Y.), and Benjamin Avila (Walden, N.Y.). We wish our seniors good luck in the future and once a Charger always a Charger!
Game One: The Wildcats took game one by a score of 7-2 to open the doubleheader. WILMU struck first with three consecutive home runs in the top of the second inning for a 3-0 lead.
Two runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth inning extended the lead to 7-0.
Dominican scratched across two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning after Phil Whitney (Newark, N.J.) recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice. Dominican's second run came on a stolen base by Whitney and Sosa-Rivas came around to score on an error.
Rich Albrecht held the score at 7-2 and secured the game one victory for Wilmington. Matt Warrington earned the win with six innings pitched and recorded nine strikeouts.
Sosa-Rivas and Avila each finished game one with a hit while Peter Kiefer (Waterford, Conn.) finished 1-3.
Game Two: Dominican jumped out in front early in the bottom of the first inning after an RBI-single by Ty Gilligan (Ringwood, N.J.) for the 1-0 lead.
WILMU tied the game in the top of the second inning after they scratched across a run on a fielder's choice and an RBI by Zach Czarnecki. Nic Hertzfeld homered in the top half of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The Chargers rallied in the bottom of the third inning and Avila added his second hit of the doubleheader which brought Tyler Richman (Sunrise, Fla.) home to tie the game 2-2.
The score remained tied through the seventh inning which sent the game into extras. A scoreless two innings of work by Robert Liriano (Haverstraw, N.Y.) kept the game tied.
Dominic Morabito (Groton, Conn.) worked a one out walk in the bottom of the ninth inning and then stole second to get into scoring position. Joseph Coppola delivered the game-winning RBI-double to close out the season with a win. Liriano earned the victory to improve to 3-5 on the season.
The Chargers complete the 2023 season with a 15-33 overall record and a CACC record of 11-14.
