Slippery Rock, Pa. (2/25/24) The Dominican University New York baseball team fell in both games of their season opening doubleheader to Slippery Rock University this afternoon.
The Chargers fell in the opening game 7-6 and again 7-6 in game two as they drop to 0-2 overall early on in the 2024 season.
Game One: Anthony Leak (Pelham, N.Y.) took the hill for the Chargers in game one and tossed 4.2 innings and recorded three strikeouts.
The Chargers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a Ty Gilligan (Ringwood, N.J.) RBI single followed by a single by Davin Keddell-Tuckey (Troy, N.Y.) which drove in two runs.
Slippery Rock got one run back in the second inning to cut the Charger lead to 3-1. Jean Nunez (New York, N.Y.) extended the lead after he singled in the fourth run and later doubled in two more runs in the fifth inning.
Slippery Rock closed the gap in the bottom of the fifth inning after Joey Purcell singled in two runs and a Brandon Butler sac fly followed by another RBI single by Noah Ross closed the deficit to 6-5.
Slippery Rock completed the comeback after a Tyler Cerame two-run double lifted them over the Chargers in game one.
Game Two: Isaiah Figueroa (Old Bridge, N.J.) started on the mound for the Chargers in game two and threw 4.2 innings and surrendered two runs both unearned.
Samuel Vasquez (Jersey City, N.J.) got the Chargers on the board in the second inning with an RBI single. Slippery Rock answered in the fourth inning after scratching across two runs after the tying run scored and the go ahead run scored after a fielder's choice.
The Chargers rallied in the fifth inning for four runs to take a 5-2 lead and extended their lead to 6-2 after Steven Martinez (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled in his second RBI of the game.
Slippery Rock rallied in the eighth inning for four runs to tie the score at 6-6. Eddie Morris tripled in two runs and later scored on an RBI single by Michael Kitko. Koby Bubash tied the game after an RBI walk.
Slippery Rock rallied in the ninth inning and Darryn Callahan delivered the game winning single to secure the sweep.
The Chargers return to action Wednesday afternoon when they visit Adelphi University for a non-conference single game at 3:00 PM.
