Staten Island, N.Y. (3/15/24) The Dominican University New York baseball team split a non-conference twinbill with the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island this afternoon played at the CSI Baseball Complex.
The Chargers earned a 9-5 victory over CSI in game one in eight innings but suffered a loss in game two by a score of 10-0.
The Chargers now hold an overall record of 4-12 while the Dolphins now sit at 5-8 on the season.
Game One: The Chargers earned an extra inning victory in game one behind starting pitcher Anthony Leak (Pelham, N.Y.) who tossed seven innings recording six strikeouts for his first win of the season.
The Chargers were led by Davin Keddell-Tuckey (Troy, N.Y.) who finished 3-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. David Knepper (Miami, Fla.) went 2-5 with three RBIs including the big two-RBI single to give DU the lead in the top of the eighth inning.
Jake Chaisongkram (Chula Vista, Calif.) went 2-4 with two doubles and three runs scored while Matthew Melendez (Coram, N.Y.) went 2-4 with one RBI. Andrew Smith (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) also drove in one RBI.
The Chargers jumped out to a 5-0 lead but the Dolphins fought their way back to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Chargers loaded the bases. David Knepper delivered the go ahead two-RBI single which also brought in a third run on an error. Knepper later scored on a wild pitch to extend the DU lead to 9-5.
Robert Liriano (Haverstraw, N.Y.) pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth inning to secure the win.
Game Two: The Dolphins rolled in game two on their way to 10-0 victory to earn a split of the DH.
CSI scored their first five runs of the game between the second and third innings and then rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
AJ Vigliotti and Anthony Sutera each finished with two hits for the Dolphins. Vigliotti drove in two RBIs while Sutera drove in one RBI. Thomas Marten also drove in two RBIs\.
For the Chargers, Keddell-Tuckey, Tyler Richman (Sunrise, Fla.), Joseph Torres (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), and Josh Harrison (Frankfurt, Germany) each finished with one hit.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow to begin a three game weekend series with the Lions of Molloy University. Game one is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM and game two will follow at 3:00 PM. Dominican will finish the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM.
