CHARGERS WIN ONE IN CACC DOUBLE-HEADER AGAINST 'CATS
New Castle, Del. (3/26/24) The Dominican University New York baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header with host Wilmington University in games played this afternoon at Wilscon Field. Dominican won the opener, 16-7, while the Wildcats took the nightcap, 10-7.
Following the split, Dominican now stands at 7-17 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Game One: The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Chargers took advantage of a Wildcat throwing error for the early 1-0 advantage. WilmU countered in the bottom half of the inning scoring a run on a triple for a 1-1 score.
Wilmington scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth for their first lead of the game, but DUNY got two runs back in the fifth on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly ball off the bat of Davin Keddell-Tuckey (Troy, N.Y.) and added a run in the sixth on the RBI single to left centerfield by Alexander Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) to re-tie the score at 4-4.
WilmU regained the lead with a three-run bottom of the sixth inning, but the Chargers rallied in their final at-bat of the game, scoring 12 runs on five hits and three errors. Shortstop David Knepper (Miami, Fla.) got things going with an RBI single through the right side and Christian Fils-Aime (North Babylon, N.Y.) followed with a bases loaded walk. Ryan Bongiorno (Stanhope, N.J.) brought home two runs with a single to right center field and Ty Gilligan (Ringwood, N.J.) plated a run with a sacrifice fly ball to right field. Keddell-Tuckey followed with an RBI single and Joseph Torres (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) singled up-the-middle to score a run. Knepper drew a bases loaded walk and Torres would later score on a wild pitch. Reyes would also draw a bases loaded walk and two runs would score on a throwing error for the final two runs of the inning and give Dominican the 16-7 lead and eventual win.
Keddell-Tuckey went 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Bongiorno went 3-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Reliever Daniel Tchou (Boca Raton, Fla.) picked up the win.
Game Two: The Chargers got on the board in the top of the first as Keddell-Tuckey hit an RBI double down the left field line and Torres reached on a fielding error which allowed another run to come home.
Wilmington got a run back in the bottom of the first and tacked on four more runs in the third frame to take a 5-2 advantage. Dominican rallied with three runs in the fourth as Reyes hit a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error which also allowed a run to score. Bongiorno hit a sacrifice fly ball to right to score a run and later Knepper hit an RBI single for the 5-5 score.
The Chargers added a run in the fifth stanza on a 'Cat fielding error, but WilmU countered with a five-run bottom of the fifth to rebuild a 10-6 advantage. DUNY scored a run on a wild pitch in the seventh for the final 10-7 Wildcat win.
Reyes and Gilligan had two hits a-piece in the loss.
Reliever Josh Harrison (Frankfurt, Germany) suffered the loss.
Dominican returns to action tomorrow morning when they travel to Bloomfield College of Montclair State University for a CACC North Division double-header. Game one is slated to begin at 10am.
