Pomona, N.Y. (4/19/24) The Dominican University New York baseball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header to the visiting Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport in games played today at Clover Stadium.
With the losses, Dominican now stands at 14-26 overall and 8-10 in conference play.
Game One: Dominican opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back RBI singles off the bats of designated hitter Ty Gilligan (Ringwood, N.J.) and catcher Joseph Torres (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) for the 2-0 advantage.
The Purple Knights got on the board in the top of the fourth and sixth inning to re-tie the game, but the Chargers added a run in their half of the inning on a fielder's choice to reclaim a 3-2 edge.
UB rallied once again with a three-run top of the seventh for their first lead of the game and take a 5-3 lead, however DUNY would get two of those runs back in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly ball and a single to left field to re-tie the contest heading into the ninth inning.
In the top of the ninth a home run and RBI double from the Purple Knight offense gave them the 7-5 lead. The bottom of the inning saw Torres deliver a two out run-scoring single up-the-middle to bring the Chargers within a run, but the UB pitcher was able to get the last out, leaving runners on first and second base for the 7-6 win.
Torres and rightfielder Andrew Smith (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) each had three hits in the game.
Game Two: The Chargers struck for three runs in the bottom of the first on a UB error and singles up-the-middle and to centerfield from Torres and Jake Chaisongkram (Chula Vista, Calif.) for the 3-0 advantage.
Dominican tacked on three more runs in the second stanza on an error, hit-by-pitch and a sac fly to extend the lead to 6-0.
The Purple Knights rallied with a five-run third inning and scored three runs in the fourth to take home the 8-6 win.
Third basemen Jean Nunez (New York, N.Y.) went 2-3 in the game.
The Chargers return to action on Sunday when they travel to conference opponent, Chestnut Hill College.
