
CHARGERS OUTLAST COUGARS IN HIGH SCORING AFFAIR
Pomona, N.Y. (4/23/24) The Dominican University New York baseball team got back into the win column this afternoon after defeating the Cougars of Caldwell University at Clover Stadium.
The Chargers improve to 15-28 overall and 9-12 in conference play while the Cougars fall to 8-23 overall and 7-14 in the CACC.
Anthony Leak (Pelham, N.Y.) earned his fourth win of the season tossing 5.1 while striking out nine and surrendered seven runs.
Robert Liriano (Haverstraw, N.Y.) recorded his second save of the season after throwing 2.1 innings and only allowed one earned run.
The Chargers pounded 17 hits with Jean Nunez (New York, N.Y.) leading the way going 4-5 while driving in three runs and scored two runs. David Knepper (Miami, Fla.) finished 3-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Ty Gilligan (Ringwood, N.J.) and Tyler Richman (Sunrise, Fla.) each finished with two hits and drove in one RBI with Gilligan adding a double.
Davin Keddell-Tuckey (Troy, N.Y.) drove in two runs while Joseph Torres (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and Jaden Maia (Southington, Conn.) each drove in one run. Anthony Nigro (Stony Point, N.Y.) finished with two hits while Zowen Collins (Cobleskill, N.Y.) recorded a double.
The Cougars jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning but the Chargers scored three runs over the first two innings behind an RBI-double by Gilligan and RBI-singles by Nunez and Richman.
After the Cougars regained the lead, the Chargers rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning for five runs to take a 9-5 lead.
Zach Saunders cracked his second RBI-double of the game for the Cougars to cut the deficit to 9-6 and Liam Lombardi followed with a two-run homer to bring the Cougars within one run.
The Chargers added one run each in the seventh and eighth innings while the Cougars added one run in their half of the eighth inning.
Liriano put a cap on his 2.1 inning save with two strikeouts in the ninth which secured the 11-9 win.
The Chargers return to action on Thursday when they visit the College of St. Rose.
