Caldwell, N.J. (4/26/24) The Dominican University New York baseball team continued their season series with north division rival Caldwell University this afternoon.
The Chargers fell in game one by a score of 7-5 and then in game two by a score of 9-2. DU falls to 15-30 overall and 9-14 in conference play.
The Cougars take the season series from the Chargers 2-1 and improve to 10-23 overall and 9-14 in conference play.
Game One: The Cougars opened the doubleheader with a 7-5 victory.
The Cougars jumped ahead early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning after a Michael Cruz sacrifice fly and then a Noah Putney three-run homer gave CU the 4-0 lead.
Stephen Young Jr. drove in the next two runs in the second and fourth innings to extend the lead to 6-0.
Jaden Maia (Southington, Conn.) drove in the first Charger run with an RBI-single in the seventh inning. Jean Nunez (New York, N.Y.) singled in two runs in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Liam Lombardi added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly to extend the CU lead to 7-3.
The Chargers rallied in the top of the ninth inning after RBI-singles by Davin Keddell-Tuckey (Troy, N.Y.) and Alexander Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) cut the deficit to 7-5.
DU loaded the bases but Caldwell pitcher Nikko Matos entered the game in relief and recorded the one out save to secure the 7-5 win.
Brandon Scalisi tossed eight innings and struck out five for his fifth win of the season.
Isaiah Figueroa (Old Bridge, N.J.) started on the mound for the Chargers and suffered the loss.
Game Two: The Cougars completed the sweep with a 9-2 victory in game two.
Elias Negron threw a complete seven innings striking out five for his second win of the season. Jedadiah Trudeau (Cohoes, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Chargers and suffered the loss.
The Chargers jumped in front in the top of the first inning after an RBI-single by David Knepper (Miami, Fla.) then later scored on an RBI-groundout by Ty Gilligan (Ringwood, N.J.).
The Cougars got one run back in the bottom of the first inning and then scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead and didn't look back from there.
The Cougars added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on their way to the 9-2 win.
The Chargers look to bounce back on Sunday for their final CACC match up of the season when they visit Goldey-Beacom College.
