Mount Olive, N.C. (3/4/25) The Dominican University New York baseball team fell in a non-conference double-head to host, the University of Mount Olive, 7-6 and 14-2, this afternoon in games played at Scarborough Field.
Following the loss, Dominican is now 1-4 on the season.
Game One: The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when the Chargers struck for a run as Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week, Erick Diaz, hit an RBI double to right field which brought home David Knepper.
The Trojans got the run back in the bottom of the sixth, but the Dominican offense exploded for five runs on six hits in the top of the seventh. The first run scored on a double play by the Mount Olive, followed by an RBI single from catcher Ty Gilligan. Two batters later Jean Nunez hit a single up-the-middle which allowed a run to come home and then a Trojan throwing error would plate another run. Knepper closed out the scoring with an RBI single for the 6-1 advantage.
Mount Olive would get a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a home run and rallied for five runs on four hits in the bottom of the ninth for the 7-6 win.
Knepper finished the game with three hits, while four other Chargers had two hits each.
Reliver Anthony Leak suffered the loss.
Game Two: The second game saw the Trojans jump out to a 5-0 lead after two innings of play. DUNY got on the board in the top of the third inning on an RBI groundout by Byron Arias and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jake Chaisongkram to cut the lead to 5-2. The Trojans countered with a two-run bottom of the third to rebuild a 7-2 advantage.
A seven run sixth inning lifted Mount Olive to the 14-2 win.
Starter Nicholas Cabello took the loss.
Dominican returns to action on Friday when they take on Saint Anselm College.
