Cary, N.C. (3/7/25) The Dominican University New baseball team earned two wins on Friday during their annual trip to Cary, N.C. Dominican defeated Saint Anselm College in game one and then followed with a win over Mansfield University in game two.
The Chargers improve to 3-4 overall during opening week.
Game One: The Chargers opened the doubleheader with a 12-6 win. Senior pitcher Anthony Leak earned his first win of the season after tossing five innings, striking out seven, and surrendered four earned runs.
Kenny Dominguez and Vincent Giambona combined for four innings of relief and held Saint Anselm to two runs down the stretch.
Dominican pounded 15 total hits with freshman outfielder Erick Diaz leading the way with four hits. The reigning CACC Rookie of the Week, ripped a homer and two doubles while driving in three runs.
Designated Hitter Kevin Hirsch finished with three hits including a double and also drove in three runs. Jean Nunez was the third Charger to drive in three runs while also finishing with two hits.
Jeuriz Polanco and Jaden Maia each finished with two hits. Polanco had a double while driving in two runs and Maia added one RBI.
Game Two: The Chargers continued their hot hitting in game two finishing with 12 hits in the game two win.
Most of the Charger runs came in the middle innings as they scored four in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend to a 6-1 lead. Dominican added one run in the seventh and two in the ninth on their way to the 9-2 victory.
Diaz added two more hits giving him six in two games and stole two bases. Maia and Ryan Bongiorno each added two hits. Bongiorno also drove in two runs.
Hirsch and Juan Peralta each had one extra base hit. Hisrch drove in a team-high three runs while Peralta drove in one run while Ty Gilligan also added one RBI.
Junior pitcher Luis Rivera earned his first win of the season tossing six strong innings of one run ball and surrendered four hits. Nicholas Cabello pitched a scoreless seventh while Jedadiah Trudeau pitched the last two innings and gave up one run.
The Chargers wrap up their trip to Cary, N.C. Sunday morning when they take on Southern New Hampshire University at 10:00 AM.
