Orangeburg, N.Y. (3/21/25) The Dominican University New York baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with the visiting Purple Knights from the University of Bridgeport in games played today at Clover Stadium.
The Chargers won the opener 9-6, but fell in the nightcap 7-3.
Dominican now stands at 10-8 on the season.
Game One: UB took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but DUNY countered with a three run bottom of the second to take the 3-2 edge. The first run came home on an error, while the second runs scored on the RBI single by David Knepper. The third run scored on the RBI ground out by Erick Diaz.
Dominican added three more runs in the fifth as Jaden Maia hit an RBI double to right center and later scored on a Purple Knights throwing error. Ian Labrador singled home a run to increase the lead to 6-2.
The seventh Charger run was scored on a UB throwing error in the sixth, while Bridgeport scored four runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 7-6. DUNY tacked on two more runs in the eighth frame on an rbi single off the bat of Ryan Bongiorno and a throwing error to rebuild a 9-6 lead and evenutal win.
Luis Rivera picked up the win in 6 and 2/3 innings of work and recording five strikeouts. John Stoliker earned the save in 2 and 1/3 innings of relief.
Maia went 3-5 in the game, while four other Chargers had two hits in the win.
Game Two: The nightcap saw the Purple Knights scored a run in the top of the first and added two more in the third to jump out to the 3-0 lead.
Jake Chaisongkram got the Chargers on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning as he hit an RBI double to left field to make the score 3-1. UB added three runs in the sixth to increase the lead to 6-1, but DUNY got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning on the two-run blast over the right field fence by Chaisongkram to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Purple Knights closed out the game with a run in the top of the seventh for the 7-3 win.
Maia went 3-3 in the game, while Chaisongkram went 2-3 with three RBIs in the loss.
Starter Anthony Leak suffered the loss in five innings of work, while collecting eight strikeouts.
Dominican returns to action tomorrow as they complete the season series with the Purple Knights by traveling to the University of Bridgeport.
