Pomona, N.Y. (3/29/25) The Dominican University New York baseball squad swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader from the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University in games played today at Clover Stadium. Dominican won the opener, 10-1 and completed the sweep with a 6-2 win in game two.
Following the sweep, the Chargers now stand at 14-11 overall and 8-6 in conference play.
Game One: THe Lions struck for a run in the top of the first on a wild pitch and held the lead until the bottom of the third when the Chargers put three runs on the board as Jaden Maia brought home a run on a sacrifice fly ball and a second runs scored on a GCU throwing error.
Dominican added a run in the fifth on the RBI single to centerfield off the bat of Maia and tacked on five runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 8-0 lead. In the sixth a run scored on a passed ball, Evan Amato stole home and a sac fly from Byron Arias. Maia then followed with a two-run single to centerfield.
In the bottom of the seventh, second basemen Ryan Bongiorno scored two runs on a single to centerfield for the 10-1 win.
Maia went 3-4 in the game with four RBIs, while Bongrino was 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Freshman Erick Diaz had two hits and scored two runs.
Starting pitcher Luis Rivera went eight innings to earn the win and collected six strikeouts.
Game Two: The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Lions scored a run for the early lead.
The Charger offense struck for five runs in the bottom of the fourth frame on two hits and one error. The first DUNY run scored on a throwing error and three batters later another run scored on a fielder's choice. An RBI groundout off the bat of Myles Vazquez brought home a run and a two-run single to left field put the Chargers ahead 5-1.
GCU got a run back in their half of the fifth inning, but the Chargers countered in the bottom of the inning on the RBI ground out from Arias for the eventual 6-2 win.
Diaz had two hits and two runs, while Arias finished with two RBIs. David Knepper also had two RBIs.
Starter Anthony Leak earned the complete game win and recording eight strikeouts.
Dominican returns to action tomorrow as they complete the season series with the Lions by traveling to Lakewood. Game time is slated to begin at 2pm
