Jackson, N.J. (3/30/25) The Dominican University New York baseball team completed the season series sweep of the Georgian Court University Lions this afternoon by besting their opponents, 17-5 in eight innings and 7-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action played at Jackson Justice Complex.
With the sweep Dominican improves to 16-11 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
Game One: The Chargers opened three runs in the top of the first inning as Jaden Maia singled home a run and later Ty Gilligan followed with a two-run single through the right side.
In the second inning, Byron Arias and Ian Labrador both hit two-run singles in the inning to increase their lead to 7-0.
DUNY added three more runs in the fourth as first basemen Juan Peralta blasted a three-run homer to right center to jump ahead 10-0. GCU got on the board in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 10-3.
Following a run by both teams in the fifth inning to see the score become 11-4, Labrador led off the top of the sixth with a solo homerun and later Erick Diaz hit a sacrifice fly ball for a 13-4 advantage.
A four-run top of the seventh with two runs scoring on Lion errors, an RBI double off the bat of David Knepper and an RBI groundout by Diaz gave the Chargers the victory.
Labrador went 3-5 in the game with three RBIs, while Peralta also had three RBIs. Four other Chargers had two hits each.
Isaiah Figueroa earned the win in five and 2/3 innings of work, allowing five runs on eight hits and seven strikeouts.
Game Two: Dominican scored a run in the top of the second as catcher Anthony Nigro singled home a run for the early lead.
In the top of the third a run scored on a throwing error and a second run came home on a wild pitch. Peralta recorded an RBI groundout to give DUNY the 4-0 lead.
Dominican added to the lead in the fifth on a GCU throwing error and a two-run homerun to left centerfield off the bat of Labrador for a 7-0 advantage. The Lions scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and added five runs in the sixth for the final 7-6 Dominican win.
Nigro had two hits in the game, while Labrador finished with two RBIs.
Starter Samuel Herrera picked up the win in five and 1/3 innings of work, allowing three runs on four hits and eight strikeouts.
The Chargers return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Lincoln University in a CACC doubleheader.
