Coach DaVonne Buckson, in his fourth season as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Dominican University, was delighted to join the Chargers staff. He previously played for Head Coach Joe Clinton and was a member of the 1995-96 team that achieved regular-season championship status and became the first in school history to be nationally ranked. Coach Buckson is eager to collaborate with Coach Clinton on the Chargers’ defense, contribute to on-court coaching during games and practices, opponent scouting, player development, and recruiting potential student-athletes.
Prior to returning to Dominican, Coach Buckson spent nine seasons at Monroe College, including a year with the Express program in NJCAA Division 3. During his tenure, he was part of both the junior varsity and varsity Mustangs, contributing to the District Championships and appearances at the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament in 2015 and 2017. Notably, the junior varsity program engaged in competitive matches against junior varsity programs, junior colleges, and preparatory schools across the Northeast.
Coach Buckson’s coaching career spans various levels, including his alma mater, Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, New York. He served as an assistant on the junior varsity team as well as the head coach of the freshman team, leading them to the championship game. Additionally, he held the position of assistant athletic director and social studies teacher during his tenure. He also coached at the Renaissance Leadership Academy in Harlem, New York, where he guided the team to multiple championships and many of his student-athletes have gone on to play at the high school and collegiate level.
In the AAU circuit, Coach Buckson commenced his coaching journey at the Dunlevy Milbank Center, alongside the Riverside Church and Riverbank Running Rebels. During his tenure at Riverbank, he has mentored numerous student-athletes, guiding them to achieve their athletic aspirations.
Additionally, Coach Buckson has actively participated in summer basketball camps, including 5 Star, Riverbank State Park, and the College of Holy Cross. These camps provide him with the opportunity to impart his expertise to aspiring basketball players, emphasizing the fundamental principles of the game.
Coach Buckson holds a degree in Social Sciences from Dominican (College) University in 1998. Before attending DUNY, he graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1993.
Overwhelmed with excitement to return home, Coach Buckson recognizes this as an extraordinary opportunity. He is eager to collaborate with the DUNY community to establish a program that resonates with the institution’s values and fosters a sense of pride among its members.
