
SOFTBALL ELIMINATED FROM NCAA EAST REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
Brookhaven, NY (5/14/11) The fifth-seeded Dominican College Lady Chargers softball team was eliminated from the NCAA East Regional #1 Tournament this afternoon after suffering a 5-2 loss to the fourth-seeded Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in the day's final game. Earlier in the day, Dominican defeated and eliminated the top-seeded Golden Lions of Dowling College, 1-0.

Brookhaven, NY (5/14/11) The fifth-seeded Dominican College Lady Chargers softball team was eliminated from the NCAA East Regional #1 Tournament this afternoon after suffering a 5-2 loss to the fourth-seeded Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in the day's final game. Earlier in the day, Dominican defeated and eliminated the top-seeded Golden Lions of Dowling College, 1-0.
Game One: The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when catcher Ashley Corrao (Staten Island, NY) led off the seventh inning with a single to right field. Designated player, Shelby Wassmann (Loudoun, VA) laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Corrao to second and Corrao stole third as the Dowling pitcher was not in the circle.
Left fielder Ashley Martinez (Bloomfield, NJ) came to the plate and delivered the game winning RBI ground out to second base which allowed Corrao to score and lift Dominican to the 1-0 victory.
Sophomore Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH) picked up the complete game shut out victory to improve to 21-8 on the season, scattering four hits and striking out five.
Game Two: SCSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a half inning of play and tacked on a fourth run in the top of the third. DC got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as second basemen Brielle Kerscher (Staten Island, NY) led off the inning with a single through the left side and Kathryn Coles (Farmville, VA) followed with single. Childers hit the RBI sacrifice to score Kerscher and make the score 4-1.
The Owls added a fifth run in the top of the seventh to go ahead 5-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Wassmann led off the inning with a walk and Martinez followed with a single to center field. An infield single by Kerscher loaded the bases and Coles followed with an RBI ground out. After a pop out, Deidre Jeppson (Sylmar, CA) walked to reload the bases with two outs and the game ended with a pop up to third base.
Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) suffered the loss (14-9), allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and three strikeouts.
With the split today, the Lady Chargers end the season with a 35-18 overall record.
