Winter Haven, Fla. (3/5/24) The Dominican University New York softball team lost two games this afternoon to Grand Valley State University and Notre Dame College in games played at THE Spring Games.
GVSU topped DUNY 10-2 in five innings in the opener and the Falcons hung on to a 7-6 win in game two.
Following the losses, the Lady Chargers now stand at 1-4 on the season.
Game One: The game was scoreless through two innings of play when the Lakers struck for three runs in the third inning and followed with three runs in the fourth for the 6-0 lead. GVSU added four runs in their half of the fifth for the 10- lead when Dominican scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The inning started off with three straight walks to Rosemary Espinoza (Beaumont, Calif.), Toni-Jo Lopez (Sylmar, Calif.) and Emma Kaszovtiz (Hicksville, N.Y.). Shortstop Chloe McIntosh (Menifee, Calif.) picked up the RBI with the bases loaded walk and two batters later Jalaeya LaPorte (Sylmar, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to bring home the second run.
Emily Baxter (Bucoda, Wash.) took the loss in four innings of work.
Game Two: The Falcons held a 6-0 lead through two innings of play, when the Lady Chargers got on the board with runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth frames.
In the second designated player, Giovanna Salcido (Diamond Bar, Calif.) singled home a run and Haylee Ridge (Bellflower, Calif.) later followed with an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 6-2.
The fourth inning saw Kaszovitz score on a wild pitch and in the fifth inning a DUNY run came home on a NDC error.
Dominican cut the lead to a single run (7-6) in the sixth inning as LaPorte brought home a run on a sacrifice fly ball and Ridge delivered a run-scoring single. However the Falcon pitcher was able to retire the next two batters for the win.
