SOFTBALL PLAYS TWO AT THE SPRING GAMES
Auburndale, Fla. (3/8/24) The Dominican University New York softball team continued their spring trip to Florida with a doubleheader this afternoon with Glenville State University and Saint Michael's College.
Game One: Dominican fell in their opening game of the doubleheader to the Pioneers of Glenville State University by a score of 3-0.
Emily Baxter (Bucoda, Wash.) started in the circled for the Lady Chargers and tossed seven innings striking out three batters abnd surrendering three earned runs. With the loss, Baxter falls to 1-3 on the season.
Caitlyn Kassay threw a complete game shutout to earn the victory and improved to 2-1 on the season for the Pioneers.
The game was scoreless through the first four innings before the Pioneers struck first with a run when Emily Nolan drove in the first run of the game on an RBI-single. GSU extended their lead with two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning and would go on to win the game 3-0.
Dominican recorded four total hits in the loss. Madison Walker (Southampton, N.J.) went 2-4 with a double while Toni-Jo Lopez (Sylmar, Calif.) and Chloe McIntosh (Menifee, Calif.) each added one hit.
Game Two: The nightcap saw the Lady Chargers suffer a tough 7-6 loss to the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College.
The Lady Chargers scored two runs in the top of the first inning as catcher Giovanna Salcido (Diamond Bar, Calif.) blasted a two-run homer over the right centerfield fence for the early lead.
Saint Michael's scored four runs in their half of the second inning to jump ahead 4-2, but Dominican got a run back in the third as Salcido picked up her third RBI of the game with the run-scoring single through the left side.
The Purple Knights increased the lead to 7-3 with a three-run bottom of the fourth. Shortstop McIntosh singled home a run in the fifth and Lopez would score on a wild pitch to make the score 7-5.
In the top of the sixth inning, Emma Kaszovitz (Hicksville, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice and allowed a run to come home to make the score 7-6.
Salcido finished the game with two hits and three RBI, while McIntosh and Haylee Ridge (Bellflower, Calif.) also had two hits each in the loss.
Starter Emily Null (Menifee, Calif.) suffered the loss.
Dominican now stands at 1-8 on the season.
The Lady Chargers conclude their trip to Florida tomorrow when they take on McKendree University and Salem University.
