Orangeburg, N.Y. (3/16/24) The Dominican University New York softball team opened up Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a double-header split against Thomas Jefferson University in games played today at the DU Softball Field.
The Rams won the opener, 4-0, while the Lady Chargers took the nightcap, 10-1 in five innings.
Dominican improves to 3-12 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Game One: The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when TJU got on the board on a single up-the-middle which allowed a run to score. The Rams added three more runs in the final at-bat for the 4-0 victory.
Rightfielder Adriana Barnes (North Brunswick, N.J.) collected two hits in the game.
Emily Baxter (Bucoda, Wash.) suffered the complete game loss.
Game Two: The Lady Charger offense came alive in game two, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits and two Ram errors for the 10-1 five inning win.
Trailing 1-0 after the top of the first, third basemen Haylee Ridge (Bellflower, Calif.) hit a two out two-run single down the right field line and catcher Jalaeya LaPorte (Sylmar, Calif.) followed with a single up-the-middle to give DUNY the 3-1 lead.
First basemen Madison Walker (Southampton, N.J.) gave the Lady Chargers a 4-1 advantage in the bottom of the second as she recorded her 100th career RBI with single to right field to plate Toni-Jo Lopez (Sylmar, Calif.)
Dominican tacked on six more runs in their half of the third inning on six hits and two errors. LaPorte doubled home a run and Lopez followed two batters later with an RBI single. A fielder's choice on a ball hit by Emma Kaszovitz (Hicksville, N.Y.) allowed a run to come home and a second RBI followed on a TJU fielding error for the 8-1 lead. Walker picked up her 101 RBI with a single up-the-middle and Kasozvitz later scored on a throwing error for the 10-1 lead and eventual win.
Walker went 3-3 in the game with two RBI, while Ridge, LaPorte and Barnes all had two hits in the win. Ridge and LaPorte finished the game with two RBI each.
Stater Emily Null (Menifee, Calif.) picked up the win, allowing one one on six hits
Dominican returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to the University of Bridgeport.
