Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (4/7/24) The Dominican University New York softball team split a non-conference double-header with host, Mercy University, in games played today at Smith Field.
Dominican won the opener, 6-3, while the Mavericks took the nighcap, 8-2.
The Lady Chargers now stand at 4-19 overall on the season.
Game One: The Mavericks led 1-0 through three innings of play when senior first basemen Madison Walker (Southampton, N.J.) led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run over the left field fence to make the score 1-1.
MU got the run back in the bottom of the fourth, but shortstop Chloe McIntosh (Menifee, Calif.) hit a grand slam over the right field fence to claim a 5-2 advantage. Desginated player Jalaeya LaPorte (Sylmar, Calif.) hit a one out infield single and Toni-Jo Lopez (Sylmar, Calif.) followed with a single down the right field line. Centerfielder Emma Kaszovitz (Hicksvile, N.Y.) laid down the bunt single to load the bases and set the stage for McIntosh.
The Mavericks added a run in their half of the sixth inning and DUNY scored a run in the seventh on an error for the final 6-3 win.
LaPorte and Lopez had two hits a-piece in the win, while McIntosh finished with four RBI.
Starter Emily Baxter (Bucoda, Wash.) picked up the win in six innings of work and collecting seven strikeouts, while Emily Null (Menifee, Calif.) earned her first save of the season.
Game Two: The Lady Chargers opened the game with a run in the top of the first as designated player Giovanna Salcido (Diamond Bar, Calif.) hit an RBI double down the right field line for the early 1-0 advantage.
Mercy rallied with two runs in the fourth and fifth frames and added four more runs in the sixth to jump ahead to an 8-1 lead. The Lady Chargers scored the final run in the top of the seventh on a fielding error for the final 8-2 score.
Kaszovitz, Salcido and Haylee Ridge (Bellflower, Calif.) all had two hits in the loss.
Baxter took the loss in five innings of work with four strikeouts.
Dominican returns to action tomorrow morning when they host Georgian Court University.
