Orangeburg, N.Y. (4/25/24) The Dominican University New York softball team concluded the 2024 season with a split against the #1/#19 Wilmington University Wildcats in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader played today at the DUNY Softball Field.
The 'Cats, who hold the top spot in the East Region and ranked 19th nationally, took the opener 9-1 in five innings, while the Lady Chargers ended the season with a 2-1 victory.
Today the Lady Chargers honored seniors #71 Haylee Ridge (Bellflower, Calif.) and #99 Madison Walker (Southampton, N.J.) with a ceremony between games.
Game One: WU scored a run in the top of the first stanza, but DUNY got the run back in the bottom of the second on the RBI double off the bat of left fielder Emily Angulo (Wilmington, Calif.) to make it a 1-1 ballgame.
The Wildcats score two runs in the third, one in the fourth and tacked on five runs in the top of the fifth to cruise to the 9-1 win.
Starter Emily Baxter (Bucoda, Wash.) suffered the loss.
Game Two: The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when Dominican struck for two runs as Toni-Jo Lopez (Sylmar, Calif.) scored on a 'Cat fielding error and Ridge hit an RBI groundout to plate Chloe McIntosh (Menifee, Calif.) and give the Lady Chargers a 2-0 lead.
WU got a run back in the fourth and had the game-tying run on the third base in the seventh with two outs, but Baxter was able to get the Wildcat hitter to hit a fly ball to left field and Angulo made a spectacular catch to end the game.
