
LADY CHARGERS EDGE MAVERICKS FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (11/20/24) The Dominican University New York women's basketball team edged the Mavericks of Mercy University 69-67 in non-conference action at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.
The Lady Chargers, the #6 team in the D2CSC Women's Basketball East Region Poll, earned their third straight win and improved to 5-1 overall. Mercy, #7 in the D2CSC Women's Basketball East Region Poll, falls to 1-3 overall on the season.
The back and forth game saw 14 total ties and 12 lead changes. Dominican played strong defense forcing 20 total turnovers earning 11 steals and capitalized on Mercy's 20 turnovers by scoring 23 points off turnovers.
Dominican was solid at the free throw line going 16-18 shooting 88.9% from the charity stripe. The Lady Chargers finished the game shooting 35.3% from the field.
After a low scoring first quarter, both teams scored double digits in the second quarter with Mercy outscoring DU 23-14 and held a 30-25 lead by halftime.
The Mavericks extended their lead to seven early on in the third before Dominican came charging back and finished the quarter scoring 26 points and held a two point lead at the start of the fourth quarter.
Late in the fourth quarter trailing by two points, Angelina DiMarsico hit a three pointer to put the Lady Chargers ahead 66-65. Later in the quarter Chidinma Ndukauba nailed a layup for a three point advantage.
Mercy cut the deficit to 68-67 and with time running out Dominican forced a turnover to regain possession. Tanasha Mills was sent to the free throw line and made one of two shots for the 69-67 lead. Dominican finished the game with one last defensive stop to secure the win.
Cayla Howard led the way in scoring with 20 points which matched a season high and nine rebounds. Howard finished the game 8-18 from the field and also recorded three blocks, two steals, and two assists.
DiMarsico finished with a season high 17 points going 3-5 from beyond the arc and 7-15 from the field. Mills added 15 points while going 9-11 from the free throw line and recorded a team-high five assists.
Ndukauba scored eight points while pulling down seven boards and Tamia Nunes scored six points while adding a team-high three steals.
Dominican returns to action next Tuesday, November 26th when they travel to the College of Staten Island to take on the Dolphins in a non-conference game at 5:30 PM.
