
CHARGERS SUFFER NON-CONFERENCE LOSS TO MERCY UNIVERSITY
Orangeburg, N.Y. (9/15/23) The Dominican University New York women's volleyball team suffered a non-conference loss to the Mavericks of Mercy University on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.
The Mavericks swept the Chargers 3-0 to improve to 5-0 overall. Dominican falls to 1-8 overall early on in the 2023 season.
The first two sets were back and forth with the Mavericks edging the Chargers 25-22 in the opener and 25-23 in the second set. Mercy completed the 3-0 sweep after a 25-14 victory in the third set.
In the first set, Mercy took a 5-4 lead over Dominican as the Chargers battled but were unable to regain the lead. The second set saw the Chargers jump ahead early but the Mavericks fought back with a 6-0 run to take the lead.
Dominican trailed 19-14 before they used a 5-0 run including four consecutive service aces by Delaney Ott (Fairbanks, Alaska) to take a 20-19 lead. The Mavericks ended the run and outscored the Chargers 6-3 to take a 2-0 advantage.
Mercy used a strong start to the third set and never looked back on their way to a 25-14 victory and completed the 3-0 sweep.
Kaitlyn Carr (Rogers, Ark.) led the way in kills for the Chargers with nine and also recorded nine points. Aaliyah Ellis (League City, Texas) added seven kills, 9.5 points which was a team-high, and three block assists.
Abigail Thompson (Aledo, Texas) finished the match with a team-high eight digs while Layla Shipley (Latham, N.Y.) added a team-high eight assists.
The Chargers return to action on Sunday when they welcome Millersville University and Roberts Wesleyan University for the Dominican University Tri-Match. The first match of the day begins at 12:00 PM.
