Orangeburg, N.Y. (9/17/23) The Dominican University New York women's volleyball team hosted the Dominican University Tri-Match on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.
Dominican opened the tri-match with a 3-2 victory over Millersville University. Roberts Wesleyan followed with a 3-1 win match #2 against Millersville University. Roberts Wesleyan capped off the day with a 3-2 victory over the Chargers in the third match.
The Chargers now stand at 2-9 overall after splitting their two matches.
Match One: Millersville opened the first match with a 26-24 win in the first set. Dominican got off to a strong start in the second set by opening with a 12-2 run. Millersville cut the lead to 24-19 but the Chargers were able to secure the second set to tie the match 1-1.
The Chargers used another comeback effort in the third set by using an 11-4 run to secure the 2-1 advantage. Millersville bounced back in the fourth set to force a fifth and final set.
Dominican opened the set with a 7-2 run but Millersville answered back with four consecutive points to cut the deficit to one. Both teams went back and forth the rest of the way but the Chargers sealed the fifth set 15-13 to earn the match victory.
Elizabeth Perez (Miami, Fla.) finished with a team-high 19 kills as well as 20.5 points and 15 digs. Kaitlyn Carr (Rogers, Ark.) added 17 kills and 17 digs. Carr also scored a team-high 21 points.
Aaliyah Ellis (League City, Texas) recorded a team-high block assists while Savannah Tody (Minneapolis, Minn.) added five solo blocks. Kaeden Sanstead (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished with a team-high 49 assists.
Match Two: The third match of the day featured the Chargers and Roberts Wesleyan University.
RWU jumped out to a quick 2-0 match lead over the Chargers. Dominican outlasted Roberts Wesleyan 25-22 in the third set to get on the board and followed with another 25-22 win to force their second consecutive fifth and final set.
RWU jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and then extended the lead to 11-6 and 13-8. Dominican came charging back by using a 7-2 run to tie the game at 15-15.
RWU was able to hold off the Dominican rally and secured the 18-16 victory and completed the 3-2 win.
Lyla Chiasson (Flower Mound, Texas) led the way with 18 kills and 18.5 points scored. Kaitlyn Carr added 12 kills, 12 points, and seven digs. Sanstead led in assists for the second consecutive match with 31. Delaney Ott (Fairbanks, Alaska) finished with a team-high 15 digs.
The Chargers return to action on Tuesday when they host the College of Saint Rose for a non-conference match at 7:00 PM.
