
'CATS RALLY TO DEFEAT WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Orangeburg, N.Y. (10/28/23) The Wilmington University women's volleyball team rallied to win sets four and five to defeat the Dominican University New York Chargers, 3-2, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action played today on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.
Following the contest, Dominican now stands at 8-17 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
The Chargers took the first set, 26-24 with Kaitlyn Carr (Rogers, Ark.) recording a kill to put them at set point and then a bad set from WilmU for the win. The Wildcats countered in the second set with three straight points to claim the 25-22 set win.
Dominican opened the third set with six consecutive points and never trailed en route to the 25-17 win to claim a 2-1 match lead. The 'Cats roared in the fourth set, quickly jumping out to an 8-4 advantage and went on to force the decisive fifth set with a 25-14 win.
In the fifth, Wilmington was at match point (14-12) when back-to-back kills from Carr and Aaliyah Ellis (League City, Texas) knotted the score at 14-14. Later the Chargers used a service ace from Lindley McCutcheon (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) to put them at match point (16-15), but an attack error re-tied the match. A WilmU kill and a bad set secured the 18-16 set win and 3-2 match victory.
Carr and Elizabeth Perez (Miami, Fla.) led the Chargers with 17 kills a-piece in the loss. Carr contributed 17 digs, while Perez added a career high 26 digs.
Ellis finished wth 13 kills, three block solos and four block assists with libero Linda Armao Peng (Houston, Texas) tallying a team best 29 digs.
Setter Kaeden Sanstead (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the way with 54 assists and 20 digs, while McCutcheon recorded 11 kills.
Dominican returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Bloomfield College of Montclair Statue University. Match time is slated for 7pm in the Hennessy Center.
