
PEREZ AND SHIPLEY RECORD CAREER HIGHS AS LADY CHARGERS RALLY TO UPEND OWLS
Orangeburg, N.Y. (9/25/24) Dominican University New York women's volleyball player, Elizabeth Perez, recorded a career high 27 kills tonight and setter Layla Shipley tallied a career high 50 assists as the Lady Chargers rallied from a 2-1 deficit tonight to defeat the visiting Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in a match played on Coach Baxter Court.
With the win Dominican improves to 5-3 overall on the season.
The non-conference match up saw Dominican win the first set 25-21, before stumbling in sets two (15-25) and three (23-25) to trail 2-1. The fourth frame saw the Lady Chargers pull away with the 25-21 win and closed out the night with a 15-11 decisive set victory for the 3-2 win.
DUNY recorded 17 kills (a night high .424 attack percentage) in the third set and followed with another 17 kills (.361 attack percentage) in the fourth to force the fifth set.
The first set was tied at 19-all when Dominican scored three straight points on back-to-back kills from Perez and a service ace from Abigail Thompson for the 23-20 lead. A kill from Gloria Cranney put them at set point and a SCSU attack error gave them the 25-21 win.
Dominican never trailed in the fourth set, leading by as many as five points (10-5, 20-15) twice, and Kaitlyn Carr recording the set-winning kill for the 25-21 win.
In the final set, DUNY used a 3-0 spurt to put them ahead 10-7. Perez would later put them at match point with a service ace, but an Owl kill made the score 14-11. A service error allowed the Lady Chargers to bring home the 15-11 win and match victory.
Perez led all attackers with a career high 27 kills, a .389 attack percentage and nine digs in the victory.
Outside hitter Carr contributed 17 kills, a .314 attack percentage and 12 digs, while setter Layla Shipley finished with 50 assists and 13 digs.
Libero Kylie Flynn added 11 digs in the win.
The Lady Chargers return to action on Friday night when they travel to the University of New Haven for a non-conference match.
