SOFTBALL PLAYS EXTRA INNINGS IN LONG ISLAND
The Lady Chargers and LIU Post Softball teams played two extra innings games this afternoon at the LIU Post Softball Complex. In a unique afternoon, the Lady Chargers defeated the Pioneers 6-5 in 13 innings in the first game and then the two teams played to a rare 1-1 tie in nine innings in game two.

The Lady Chargers and LIU Post Softball teams played two extra innings games this afternoon at the LIU Post Softball Complex. In a unique afternoon, the Lady Chargers defeated the Pioneers 6-5 in 13 innings in the first game and then the two teams played to a rare 1-1 tie in nine innings in game two. With the victory, Dominican improves to 16-11-1 overall.
Game 1: Dominican got out to a strong start scoring three runs in the first inning. LIU Post responded with two runs and again in the third to gain a 4-3 advantage in the game. Later in the seventh Freshman infielder Brianna Espino (Holland, Ohio) singled up the middle to score two runs to put the Lady Chargers ahead 5-4.
The Pioneers would strike back with two outs in the bottom of the seventh with a one run double to right center. Finally after five scoreless innings freshman infielder Taylor Gilligan (Medford, N.J.) singled to left field to score to winning run.
Three players including Gilligan, led the Lady Chargers with 2 RBIs each.
Sophomore pitcher Desiree Joines (Stewartstown, Pa.) went the distance throwing a 13 inning complete game allowing two earned runs and six strikeouts and improved to 10-5 overall.
Game 2: The second game again featured two evenly matched teams with less offense. LIU Post broke the stalemate in the sixth inning on an infield hit that scored one run. Dominican responded immediately in the seventh when senior outfielder Brianna Arends (Raritan, N.J. ) connected with a one run single through the left side. For the second time on the day the game headed to extra innings. Both teams were unable to break the tie and the game would be called for darkness after nine innings.
Sophomore pitcher Jenna Maska (Warren, Mass.) threw nine innings allowing four hits and one earned run and struck out six batters.
The Lady Chargers will next battle CACC opponent Philadelphia University on Sunday April 10th at 2PM and 4PM on the DC Softball Field.
