DOMINICAN CHARGES PAST MAVERICKS
Caldwell, N.J. (11/12/23) The Dominican University New York men's basketball team scored 62 points in the second half to charge past the Mavericks of Mercy University, 112-87, today in the finale of the Caldwell Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Caldwell University, in the Newman Center.
This is the second game in three days where the Chargers scored more than a 100 points and now improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Mavericks led 23-20 with 11:14 left in the first half when Dominican went on a 13-0, capped off by a jumper by Isaiah Honis (Bridgewater, N.J.) to jump ahead 33-23 with under seven minutes to go. The Chargers closed out the first half on a 12-3 run to make the score 50-41 at the intermission.
Dominican never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 33 points (97-64) on a three-point basket by Javel Cherry (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) with a little over seven minutes left in regulation. The final Charger basket of the contest was scored by Isiah Benbow (Harlem, N.Y.) with 1:19 on the clock.
Cherry led six Chargers with 24 points (8-12 from the floor and 6-7 from the arc). Joseph Merrill (Derry, N.H.) netted 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Freshman Key'Sean Maynard (Queens, N.Y.) scored a career high 12 points, while Joshua Serrano (Amityville, N.Y.) also tallied 12 points.
Guard Honis scored 11 points (4-7 from the floor, 3-4 from the arc) and Seth Sharif-Brown (Hackensack, N.J.) added 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Chargers returns to action on November 18th when they host Daemen College on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.
