DOMINICAN DOWNS LIONS
Orangeburg, N.Y. (1/14/24) The Dominican University New York men's basketball team upended the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University, 87-70, this afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game played on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.
With the victory the Chargers improve to 10-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while the Lions fall to 2-13 overall and 0-4 in the CACC.
The Lions opened scored the game's opening basket and held a 20-19 edge with 8:52 to play in the first half when Dominican charged back with the next 11 points, capped off by a trey from guard Joseph Merrill (Derry, N.H.) to jump ahead 30-20. Merrill scored the last basket of the period for the Chargers and gave them the 38-31 advantage at the break.
Dominican never trailed in the second frame en route to the 87-70 victory. The Chargers shot 53.1% (34-64) from the floor during the game and went 9-12 (75%) from the charity stripe.
Guard Javel Cherry (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led all scorers with 26 points (10-14 from the floor and 6-9 from the three-point arc), four rebounds and three steals.
Seth Sharif-Brown (Hackensack, N.J.) came off the bench to net 20 points (8-13 from the floor) and five rebounds, while Jaden Honis (Bridgewater, N.J.) scored 10 points and five assists. Merrill finished with nine points, four rebounds and four steals in the victory.
Guard Joshuel White (Paterson, N.J.) dished out a game best eight assists, five rebounds and six points and Isaiah Honis (Bridgewater, N.J.) tallied seven points and five caroms.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday evening when they host Felician University in a CACC North Division battle on Coach Baxter Court.
