LADY CHARGERS OUTLAST OWLS IN SECOND HALF COMEBACK
Orangeburg, N.Y. (12/30/23) The Dominican University New York women's basketball team closed out 2023 with a home non-conference victory over the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University.
Dominican outscored the Owls 45-32 in the second half to improve to 3-8 overall on the season.
Cayla Howard (Naugatuck, Conn.) scored a game-high 23 points on 6-11 from the field and 9-11 from the charity stripe. Howard also recorded five rebounds in the win.
Chidinma Ndukauba (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded her second double-double of the season by scoring 19 points and pulled down 10 boards. Alexis Suarez (Poughquag, N.Y.) recorded a career high 13 assists in the win as well as adding seven points.
Keylee Harrison (Newport News, Va.) provided 12 points and five boards off the bench.
The Owls put up 28 first quarter points with a strong start to the game and held a 10 points lead at halftime.
The Owls extended to their largest lead of the game in the third quarter which was 12 points but the Lady Chargers fought their way back into the game.
Dominican finished the third quarter on a 24-13 run led by Howard who scored 12 points in the quarter. Dominican took a one-point lead at the end of the quarter but two free-throws regained the lead for the Owls heading into the fourth quarter.
Dominican solidified the win with 19 fourth quarter points and were led by Suarez and Ndukauba who combined for 15 points in the final quarter.
The Lady Chargers shot 43.3% from the field and held the edge in rebounds and second chance points.
The Lady Chargers return to conference play and close out their homestand next Wednesday when they host the Bears of Bloomfield College of MSU at 5:30 PM.
