Pomona, N.Y. (4/4/19) The Dominican College baseball team earned a split with the Concordia College Clippers. The Chargers are now 16-13 (9-7 CACC) and the Clippers are 10-21 (5-11 CACC) on the season.
Game One: The Chargers dropped the opening game of the doubleheader to the Clippers in a back and forth game by a score of 16-12. The Clippers completed the comeback victory with a big five-run ninth inning to solidify the win.
The Chargers opened the game by jumping to an early 6-0 lead and later in the game held an 8-1 lead. The Clippers cut the deficit to 8-6 in the fourth inning. The Clippers took the lead in the sixth inning but the Chargers were able to tie the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
The Clippers extended to an 11-9 lead in the 8th inning, but the Chargers answered to regain the lead and entered the 9th inning up 12-11. The Clippers used a big inning in the top of the 9th to regain the lead back 16-12 which would eventually become the final score.
Connor Stapleton earned the win in relief for the Clippers in 1.2 innings of work. Hermes Abreu and Tyler Epple combined for eight hits and five RBI with Abreu driving in four. Matt Rinaldi and Jake Partridge each drove in three RBI in the win.
Elijah Tavarez (Valley Stream, N.Y.) drove in a team-high four RBI for the Chargers and recorded three hits including a double and scored a run. Billy Rotella (Stony Point, N.Y.) had a double and three RBI. Brian Rotella (Stony Point, N.Y.) drove in two RBI and recorded two hits.
Game Two: The Chargers earned a walk-off victory in game two to bounce back from the loss in game one. The Clippers struck first in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. DC got on the board in the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit to 2-1.
DC took the lead in the third inning and added their fourth run in the fifth inning for the 4-2 lead. The Clippers recorded a run in the sixth inning and tied the game in the top of the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jordan Bernacet (Schenectady, N.Y.) led off the inning with a walk. Brian Rotella drove a pitch into the right-center field gap and Bernacet scored from first on the game-winning walk-off triple by Brian Rotella.
Justin Decker (Rotterdam, N.Y.) had three hits and drove in one RBI. Jordan Bernacet, Jayson Wright (North Rockland, N.Y.), and Joshua Colon (Bronx, N.Y.) each drove in one RBI.
Brandon Mology (Wall Township, N.J.) started for the Chargers and pitched 6.1 innings and struck out seven batters. Jordyn Schwark (Kingston, N.Y.) entered the game in relief and recorded the win.
DC will be back in action on Saturday, April 6th when they visit Jefferson University for a conference doubleheader. Game one will begin at 12:00 PM and game two is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
