MEN'S BASKETBALL SUFFERS FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON AS COMEBACK EFFORT FALLS SHORT
Waterbury, Conn. (12/2/23) The Dominican University New York men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season to CACC north division rival Post University this afternoon.
The Chargers' second half comeback effort fell just short as the Eagles edged Dominican 79-77. Dominican falls to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the CACC while the Eagles improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Dominican's leading scorer was Seth Sharif-Brown (Hackensack, N.J.) who finished with 21 points on 10-18 from the field and added four boards. Javel Cherry (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) finished with 15 points including three three-pointers while Joshua Serrano (Amityville, N.Y.) scored 13 points and went 3-4 from three-point range.
Jaden Honis (Bridgewater, N.J.) provided 11 points including a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe while Joseph Merrill (Derry, N.H.) finished with eight points and Emmanuel Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a team-high seven boards.
After an even first half Post took a six-point lead into halftime. The Eagles used an 18-6 run to jump out to their largest lead of the game which was 18 points to open the second half.
The Chargers answered with a 10-1 run and a 15-2 run down the stretch to take the lead with 32 seconds left to play.
Deng Deang was sent to the free-throw line with 11 ticks left and made the first attempt to tie the score but missed the second and Bol Akot came up with the big offensive board which gave Deang the opportunity to put the Eagles ahead 79-77 with four seconds remaining.
The Eagles secured the win after a Jaden Honis three-point attempt was blocked by Quest Harris.
Deang finished with a team-high 23 points and seven boards to lead the Eagles. Kyle Alcy added 12 points while Robert Sanders and Derrick Thomas II each added 10 points.
The Chargers return to action on Sunday, December 17th when they travel to Daytona Beach, Florida for the first of two games of the Daytona Beach Shootout.
