Hillburn, N.Y. (3/31/23) The Dominican University New York men's lacrosse team opened conference play with a loss to the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College.
The Chargers fall to 2-7 overall on the season and 0-1 in conference play. The Griffins improve to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference after the win.
Gerardo Caltagirone (Tappan, N.Y.) started in goal for the Chargers and recorded 17 saves but suffered the loss. Austin Jones started in goal for CHC and recorded 15 saves to earn the win.
Both teams traded goals in the first quarter. Sean Cosgrove (Warwick, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the game and James Conklin (Warwick, N.Y.) recorded the assist.
The Griffins scored the next three goals before William Gordon (Amityville, N.Y.) scored with less than one minute left in the first half to cut the deficit to 3-2. Richard Spivak (Center Moriches, N.Y.) recorded the assist on the second Dominican goal.
The Griffins scored eight unanswered goals in the second half with five goals in the third quarter and three in the fourth quarter.
Austin Jones made 11 of his 15 saves in the second half to keep the Chargers off the board.
Cosgrove and Cole Vencak (Smithtown, N.Y.) each led the team in ground balls with four. Caltagirone also recorded three ground balls.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, April 5th when they travel to Post University for a conference game with the Eagles at 3:00 PM.
