New Haven, Conn. (2/4/20) Defending champion Wilmington University was tabbed first in the 2020 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Preseason Coaches Poll on Tuesday, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. WilmU earned 177 points in the voting, including nine of a possible 14 first-place votes. Voting for the award was conducted by the league's 14 head coaches in the sport.
Rounding out the top three of the standings included second-place Caldwell University (166 pts, 3 1st place nods) and third-place Georgian Court University (165, 1). GCU advanced to last season's CACC Championship Final, but Wilmington defeated the Lions twice to capture the conference crown. It was the Wildcats' third CACC Championship since 2014.
Wilmington will be led this season by reigning CACC Player of the Year Rosa'Lynn Burton, who is also one of the top players in the nation and will be on the watch list for Division II National Player of the Year. The Wildcats are led by head coach Mike Shehorn.
WilmU will have its work cut out in trying to defend the CACC crown in 2020, as Caldwell will look to regain it status as the top team in the conference following missing the NCAA Regional in 2019. The Cougars are slated to return several letterwinners in 2020, as they will try to win their third CACC crown in the last four years (won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018). GCU is also expected to return several letterwinners from a year ago that saw them win the CACC regular season championship and ultimately earn an at-large bid to the NCAA regional.
